(USED) For our money, you can't find a better sounding Gibby-style guitar than the instruments built by our friend Kevin Kopp. The iconic looks are there, enhanced by Kevin's world-famous hand-rubbed sunburst... but importantly, every Kopp instrument seems to have the soul (and the sound) of a great vintage guitar.
The NL is Kevin's interpretation of the 14-fret, deep body L-00 models that found popularity in the first half of the last century, and are once again flourishing in the first half of this one. This shape is inarguably comfy to hold and play, and the focused sound makes it a favorite of blues pickers and singer-songwriters. We're gonna use the old "on steroids" cliché here, because truly Kevin has delivered a next-level instrument here. The construction materials were hand-picked to be as responsive as possible, and the torrefied Adirondack spruce top has both guts and complexity in the sound. The deep maple body means that the box has a lower resonant frequency, meatier bass notes and doesn't suffer any L-00 boxiness. It's disarmingly lively.
One of our favorite features is Kevin's ultra-thin, lightly relic'd finish. Kevin tells us that since the guitar never goes to the buffing wheel, the lacquer can be applied extremely thin, and by imparting finish crazing into the top and breaking the surface tension, we get that quickness and looseness that we usually only hear in vintage guitars after many decades. It's pretty uncanny! Indeed, this could be the best sounding NL we've heard to date.
1 3/4" nut on a comfortable soft V neck, 2 1/4" string spacing at the saddle. Short scale. Bound fingerboard with fancy NL inlay pattern and fleur de lis peghead flourish. Single-band rosette with bound sound hole. Hand-rubbed full-body sunburst. Fire stripe pick guard. Light relic job means fine finish checking throughout, simple and tasteful, and this new guitar feels like an old friend. Relic'd Waverly tuners complete the look. Excellent condition with no issues! Includes original hard case.
