(NEW) There is no doubt a trend in fine acoustic and electric instruments for pre-aging or relic-ing the finish on new instruments, and the reasons are at once aesthetic, tonal and practical. Obviously, an instrument like this Huss & Dalton DM is not going to be afraid of a ding from a flatpack or a finish crack from a cold snap. The attention-grabbing looks evoke an instrument that has had a full life on the road and in the jam. Tonally, though, there are also benefits from this "Stage Worn" treatment, namely the fact that by spraying a thin lacquer finish on the top and then breaking the surface tension with finish checking means a highly responsive top, one that is vibrating at its full capacity.
This DM just looks and feels so right! Thermo-cured (torrefied) Sitka spruce top with mahogany back and sides, and featuring a sumptuous dark sunburst and a medium-heavy relic treatment from Mark Dalton. Being a DM, it comes standard with 1 23/32" nut width, 2 1/4" string spacing at the saddle, and traditional long scale length. The DM has a 4 3/8" sound hole, which is larger than traditional dreads, but helps to balance the tonal spectrum and temper the bass... but don't worry, there's plenty of bass! Ebony fingerboard and bridge, mahogany neck with mellow mod-V profile, Waverly relic tuners. Includes TKL tweed-style hard case.
The sound is very impressive, punchy and round. Would make an excellent bluegrass guitar, but also has ample dynamics to back vocals.
