(NEW) The search for the perfect Gibby can be fraught... everyone knows that the originals were hit and miss, and the qualified great vintage examples fetch a pretty penny, indeed. The onus falls on the modern builder who wants to carry on the tradition to create an instrument that is immediately satisfying, musical, lightweight and imbued with a certain amount of magic, that it might compete with anyone's "dream guitar".
Whelp, we hear a lot of good ones, we hear a lot of GREAT ones, and then there's the ones that are just undeniable. This Fairbanks F-35 Southern is exactly that, the full package, the embodiment of everything we love about this shape. It takes Dale's usual tonal updates (tonal clarity, well defined bass and midrange, muscular without betraying the EQ profile of the originals) and adds that MAGIC that we're all looking for. You feel it the first time you pick it up, you hear it on first strum.
Sitka spruce top, mahogany back/sides/neck, light relic Nitro finish to break the surface tension of the top and get it moving like crazy. The braces are Adirondack, ramped on the X and scalloped on the tone bars. It has a 1 3/4" nut, 24 3/4" scale length, 2 1/4" string spacing at the saddle. Dale describes the neck as an "easy V" and it measures .914" at the first fret and 1.097" at the ninth. It has a vintage feel, but not in an exclusive way, we're pretty sure you can get around on it. The Madagascar rosewood fingerboard has parallelogram inlays, the top has all those extra purfling lines and the bridge is Madrose with bone pins. Celluloid firestripe pick guard, relic'd Waverly tuners with ivoroid buttons. Includes deluxe TKL case.
It's just one of those ones, you guys. Buy it, don't buy it, we'll be happy to have it live here forever! Just so happens to have risen to the top of the heap for traditional mahogany slope Ds. Color us not surprised, Dale is one of the best!
