(NEW) For those who think that they've played them all: may I introduce you to my good friend Wenge? Wenge is an African hardwood that has an incredible stiffness to weight ratio, and for that reason it conjures tones that are about as close to Brazilian rosewood as anything. Since Braz remains rare, restricted and EXPENSIVE, it's wonderful to have Wenge as a compelling alternative. Luthiery legends like Ervin Somogyi have been singing its praises for years, and we're here to keep spreading the good news about this underknown tone wood.
As rosewood Collings dreads go, this one feels pretty light on its feet and has a rich, smooth sound. Plenty of low end and complex overtones, but never forgetting that signature Collings clarity that makes recording engineers and soundmen smile. We had this one built with good old Sitka spruce and we had them leave out the tongue brace to loosen up the upper bout and up the warmth factor. All of the style 2 appointments are on display: ivoroid body binding, 3-ring rosette, zipper back strip, herringbone top trim, diamond volute. This one has a 1 3/4" nut, 2 3/16" string spacing at the saddle, original mod-V neck profile. Waverly tuners, hard case.
An extremely satisfying dreadnought that has a dark horse/secret weapon vibe about it. Oops, guess the secret is out!
