(NEW) We are extremely proud and honored to present this masterpiece from the team at Collings Guitars in Austin, TX. One of just 6 limited edition instruments, each different models, this 003 14-fret features reclaimed Alaskan "blue" Sitka spruce with dramatic bearclaw figuring, and flame-y figured mahogany. From Collings:
"Throughout much of the 20th century, Southeast Alaska’s sheltered bays and coves were home to a large number of floating structures that supported the area’s fish trapping and logging industries. These camps were built upon long Sitka spruce logs that spent over half a century floating in the saltwater, being towed from place to place as the weather and waters allowed.
But as the need for these structures dwindled in recent decades, the camps were either sold for “float house living” or purchased for salvage. In the latter case, it was discovered upon disassembly that, due to decades of floating in the saltwater, boards cut from many of the spruce logs had taken on a dark bluish/greyish hue. A very limited number even contained striking bearclaw figure.
With the rarity of this find in mind, we decided to build a unique collection of six special guitars. Each instrument will showcase one of these bearclaw-figured, reclaimed Alaskan Sitka spruce tops, along with highly-figured flamed mahogany back and sides and other matching appointments."
This guitar took our breath away when we first opened the case. Perfect to the last detail, in looks and in sound. The balance, the way it feels in your lap, simply impeccable. This 003 has all tone and volume to compete with some of the best OMs, but its size will make it attractive to fans of smaller instruments.
003-style appointments include full body, fingerboard and peghead binding, as well as a marquetry back strip and abalone rosette. The nut is 1 3/4" on Collings' standard modified V neck, with short 24 7/8" scale length and string spacing of 2 3/16" at the saddle. The ebony fingerboard has custom engraved inlays at the 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th, 12th, 15th and 17th frets. The tuners are nickel Waverlies. Includes original TKL hard case.
Truly one of the best small guitars we've ever played. It is a prize. It will not last. For those asking to be called when something special arrives, consider yourselves called!
