(USED) The appeal of a feather-light, vintage-inspired guitar is never lost on us, especially when it's built by a man like Richard Hoover and his able team at Santa Cruz Guitar Company. The H13 is his take on the 13-fret Nick Lucas models that Gibson invented, and we'd be surprised if Gibson ever made one that sounded and played as nicely as this instrument! It's just undeniably fine, and it doesn't hurt that it's rounding third base toward its 20th birthday and it looks like it just arrived from the factory!
13-fret instruments split the difference between the bass-forward sound of a 12-fretter and the additional fret access of a 14-fretter, and on NL-style guitars the 13-fret configuration brings out the best that the size has to offer. This one has an Adirondack spruce top with a beautifully sprayed traditional sunburst, dark stained mahogany back and sides and a mahogany neck with satin finish and a modified V profile. The neck thickness is .832" at the first and .973" at the 9th, and it has a flat-ish shoulder that keeps it from feeling clubby or really filling up the hand. The body is deep, nearly 5" at the tail block, so the guitar has plenty of rumble for its size. 1 3/4" nut with 2 3/16" string spacing at the saddle, long 25.4" scale length. Ivoroid body and neck binding, NL-style inlays. Open-gear tuners with Santa Cruz engraving.
As said above, this one looks brand-y new, but you know us, we disclose everything we possible can... and not uncommon to SCGC guitar, there is minor finish disturbance in front of the bridge caused by the forward pull from string tension. It is very, very hard to detect without turning it to the light and peering very closely, but we thought you should know. No secrets between friends! Otherwise the frets are near perfect, the action is great and there is plenty of saddle still to go, the slightest belly in the lower bout that we would expect from a nearly 20 year old guitar that only weighs 3lbs 10oz. Includes original TKL case.
