(USED) Louis Stiver has had a long and storied career building traditional mandolins in Ohio and Pennsylvania, and for our money they capture the throaty bass and overall growl of an original Loar just about as well as any mandolins being made. If you frequent any Bluegrass events in Western PA or Eastern Ohio, we call this “Stiver country,” and if you hear a strong mandolin chop from a quarter mile away when you exit your car in the parking lot, chances are it’s a Stiver! ;-)
We’ve had the privilege of handling about one hundred of them since 1989. A models, F models, 2-points, plus Lou did all our mandolin repairs and re-frets on all brands here for several decades.
Now in his 90s and retired, Lou's mandolins are becoming increasingly rare and precious, even in our region, where so many of them were originally sold and owned. This fine example has an Adirondack spruce top, flamed maple back/sides, a flat ebony fingerboard refretted with Gold EVO fret wire, scooped Florida extension, Allen tailpiece, Schaller tuners, bone nut, and an abalone peghead fern. It has a traditional 1 1/8" nut.
Condition is very good with some faint lacquer checking and a number of dings in the top. Frets are almost new and the instrument has no structural issues. This mandolin is a prize - truly an heirloom grade instrument. A hard case is included.
