(NEW) Troublesome Creek is a non profit luthiery enterprise in Kentucky who trains people who are in recovery from addiction as skilled luthiers, builders and finishers. The guitars and mandolins that they produce tend to be lightly built and very simply appointed, with the focus being on tone, playability and the use of materials native to the US.
This SD-0 comes in at just over 3 1/2 lbs, so it feels very light in the hand for its size. It has an Adirondack spruce top with some bold winter growth showing, and the back/sides/neck are black walnut. For those new to walnut as a tonewood, it sounds very similar to good mahogany, with a good sustain. This guitar has a heck of a growl to it. It is 4 1/4" deep at the tail block, so about 1/2" less deep than a typical Gibby-style jumbo. The 13-fret body joint adds a little muscle to the low end.
1 11/16" nut, 2 1/4" string spacing at the saddle, long 25 1/2" scale length. Ebony fingerboard and bridge. The neck is a comfortable modern low oval, .80" deep at the first fret, .90" at the 9th. Price includes hard case.
