(USED) In a shop filled with world class acoustic guitars, sometimes one walks in that is so rare and wonderful that it instantly rockets to "probably the best in the store" status. This 12-fret dreadnought from Preston Thompson (rest in peace) has, in its beautiful and elegant way, assumed that mantle, and we couldn't be happier about it!
This 2017 model was built when Thompson himself was at his peak involvement in the company, it sports impeccable craftsmanship and is made from the best materials that were available at the time. The back and sides are the famous "Shipwreck" Brazilian rosewood that appeared on a very small number of Thompson guitars. From their website:
"Our original shipwreck Brazilian Rosewood back and sides were acquired by our supplier in 2005 from the north Atlantic coast of Brazil by a salvaged diver. Supply ships that sunk along the coast during the 1930’s were headed to the Northern European waters with Brazilian logs to be made into Danish furniture. The logs might have been too heavy for this ship and it went down, only to be found many years later. The logs were processed and certified in Brazil with Cities. These sets were later sold to us and other luthiers to make guitars that had that vintage tone from old logs from under the sea."
It should be obvious from the photographs that this is perfectly quartersawn wood, we simply don't see a lot of wood like this on modern era guitars. The top is tight-grained Adirondack spruce, and the top has a distinctive dark sunburst, herringbone top trim and an abalone rosette. The instrument is fully bound in ivoroid for a traditional look, with an abalone torch inlaid on the peghead. The mahogany neck has a modern low oval profile, hardwood back strap on the peghead with Thompson logo inlay and a dart volute. The fingerboard and bridge are ebony and the bridge has an anchor inlay to denote the "Shipwreck" status. 1 23/32" nut width, 2 5/32" saddle spacing and unusual for a Martin-style 12-fret dread, it has a SHORT 25" scale length.
Condition is excellent with no issues whatsoever. Includes Harptone hard case.
This is an heirloom-grade instrument if we've ever seen one. Truly special and unique.
