(USED) From the collection of local blues master Ernie Hawkins, here's an early '60s J45 that has a lot of mojo and a lot of tunes left to play! The serial number is quite faded but we believe this guitar to be from 1960 or 1961, based on several indicators.
It has a Sitka spruce top, mahogany back and sides, ramped bracing with two tone bars and a single-ply maple bridge plate. The neck isn't as pencil-thin as they went in the late '60s, it has a C shape with 1 11/16" nut, 2 3/16" string spacing at the saddle. The neck thickness measures .941" at the first fret and 1.005" at the ninth.
Condition: this guitar is a player all the way, with lots of finish checking, scratches and pick wear on the top. Significant finish wear near the heel on the back of the neck. The peghead has some chipping and has a blunted corner on the treble side. There is a cleated sound hole crack near the treble side of the fingerboard extension, as well as a cleated back crack. The adjustable saddle was filled and re-slotted for a bone saddle, a common modification to improve tone on '60s Gibsons. A pickup system was removed at some point, and a hole in the pickguard was filled and the endpin hole plugged. The original tuners have been replaced with closed-gear Schallers.
Playability is good with 6/64" action on the bass side and 5/64" on the treble at the octave fret. Includes non-original hard case.
