Mandolins
Acoustic Music Works generally keeps about seventy-five mandolins in stock. That's a lot of mandolins. A customer walked in the store and remarked "wow, you have more mandolins than any store in town...wait, you have more mandolins than all the other stores in town combined....Whoah...and then some!"
We've got some student and rental instruments from Kentucky, Breedlove, Gold Tone and Trinity College, and VERY high quality intermediate mandolins from Breedlove, Kentucky, Eastman, and Weber. What we *do* though, is feature professional grade mandolins from Collings, Summit, Phoenix, Weber, National Reso-Phonic and Pomeroy and we often have fine used Stiver and vintage Gibson mandolins.
Here is a sampling. We buy, sell, trade, and invite consignments. We are always interested in considering vintage mandolins as well as used Gibson, Collings, Red Diamond, Stiver, and Stelling mandolins. We ship worldwide. All e-mails receive a prompt and courteous reply.
Collings mandolins, like their guitars, set the modern "production" shop standard for acoustic instruments. They just do. Handcrafted in Austin, Texas, these instruments are
a player's dream and we know they are the vintage collectibles of the future. Collings mandolins are VERY difficult to keep in stock. As one of Collings' top dealers, we get between three and four mandolins per month and that is never enough so we keep a waiting list. Plan ahead, feel free to inquire, and invest with confidence. If you don't see what you are looking for, please call or e-mail. We love to talk about Collings mandolins and we invite special orders. If you have a used Collings to trade or consign, we go the extra mile. Try us first!

Collings MT-O
oval hole mandolin Just arrived (NEW)The new Collings oval hole mandolin. Just announced at Summer NAMM. The MT2-O will feature oval hole with rosette, and X-bracing. Otherwise, the features will adhere to the MT2 standard (sunburst, double bound maple back and sides, Adirondack spruce top, cast tailpiece.) The list price will be $3,800. Our first one features a beautiful one-piece back. To no one's surprise, Bill Collings took on another project, another category, and he got it exactly right. The new MT-O oval hole is not quite as loud, doesn't cut like an F hole, but has roundness, sweetness and sustain that is characteristic of the oval hole design. He nailed it.

Amber Englemann Just arrived and just spectacular (NEW) Every once in a while, we get something so special from Collings, so over-the-top good, that we have to shout it from the rooftops. Look at the tortoise binding against the amber stain. Look at the master grade Englemann spruce top. Listen to the tone. Bask in the immediate gratification, wamth, gurgle, and throaty satisfaction that comes from this mandolin. We know our mandolins. This is a great mandolin. For those of you who play mandolin, you don't have one like this. For those of you who don't play mandolin yet, this instruement is the perfect reason to start. MT2 custom amber - Englemann
(SOLD) (NEW) The second of the two custom amber MT2 mandos will be an MT2 amber/tortoise custom with ENGLEMANN spruce top, nickel hardware, black tuner knobs, pickguard (YES, pickguard on a lacquer mandolin) and *tortoise* bindings. We love the look and we are seeing a trend develop toward custom Englemann topped premium mandolins for certain discerning players. Hairy armed bluegrassers prefer Red spruce but many fine players (Thile and O'Brien, to name two) find Englemann is the stuff of immediate gratification. Designed to resemble this one. Just arrived and just magnificent, with that more delicate woody sound that Englemann delivers out of the box. Lighter toned and less aggressive, has that nice loose throaty gurgly thing going on, without a hint of stiffness. Nice looking striped ebony headstock veneer and the black knobbed tuners look hot! BLONDE!
Just arrived! (USED) Collings MT mandolin - Our best seller - and clearly the best buy in a pro quality satin finish mandolin - the Collings MT model. Don't settle for less. This is a 2007 custom model - another special request - blonde with ivoroid binding added.
Collings has stopped offering blonde MT mandolins, as the "blond - worthy" maple is too expensive for a mandolin in this price range. He saves the premium maples now for his $4500 and $10,000 MF and MF5 mandolins. This is one of the last of the beautiful blond MT mandolins. We sold it new last year before the blonds were exiled. We sell a LOT of Collings mandolins and guitars. It is very unusual for us to get an MT mandolin back on trade. It is almost unheard of to get a blonde back. Like going back to the prom with your best girl. She is rare, she is fine, she is precious, and she sings. She is SOLD.

We are very pleased to offer Phoenix mandolins by Rolfe Gerhardt of Thomaston, Maine. Phoenix is a small company building approximately forty mandolins per year and dedicated to crafting instruments which are visually and tonally stunning. His dual point Jazz, NeoClassical, Deluxe, and Bluegrass are our favorites. They are light and balanced with lots of technical innovation and great responiveness and bark. We're proud to represent Rolfe and offer these superbly crafted professional grade instruments.
Rolfe, builder of the legendary Unicorn mandolins in the 70's, has spent the last thirty years applying new musical instrument technologies to the 8-string American mandolin. Using the finest tonewoods and forty years of experience, he crafts the musicians' dream mandolins: a unique extra-light string model for classical, folk, jazz, and Celtic music; a model specifically designed for the jazz enthusiast with dual pickups; a highly-refined model for all styles of playing with medium strings and featuring the famous Unicorn vine inlay; a top-of-the-line model for medium strings with its abalone purfling and flying phoenix headstock; and there are three Bluegrass models for medium-heavy strings including the incomparable Master Model. Pay attention to these mandolins.
Phoenix
Jazz
Just arrived (NEW) Jazz model - dual pickup electric acoustic model. We mean it when we ccall this the "ulitimate" electric-acoustic mandolin. The McIntyre Feather pickup, tried and proven on other Phoenix models, provides the natural wood sound amplification that is one aspect of mandolin sound. A suspended magnetic pickup custom crafted by Kent Armstrong provides the electronic element that is an essential part of jazz. A 22-fret fingerboard is used to position the pickup where Kent Armstrong recommends. Voiced for flat-wound strings 011"/.016"/.022"/.034", delivered with Thomastik stark (heavy). $4,800 And Wow, What a great mandolin. Lively, woody, and punchy as can be acoustically...but just wait til we plug it in! Our price - $ 4,320
$4,320
Phoenix Standard Just arrived (NEW) Wow, nothing "standard" about these! Rolfe has changed the designation from "NeoBluegrass Model" (which was a bit of a mouthful) to "Standard" with McIntyre Feather pickup ($200) and optional finger rest ($100) installed. Everywhere you look on these instruments, you see innovative and interesting details from carbon graphite neck reinforcement to "Timeless Timber" maple for the base of the bridge to engraved tailpiece cover to installed strap button to really great fit and finish and Eastman fiberglass suspension case. A remarkable instrument, well conceived and brilliantly executed. List price: $3,900 $3,495

NeoClassical
Just arrived (NEW) We are HUGE fans of this model - as we are of all Phoenix mandolins, but we have to confess a special affection for this model. For our mandolin orchestra types and those of Celtic influence.....the charming and visceral NeoClassical Phoenix... This model is designed for light gauge strings (comes with Thomastik 154-K) and responds to a very light touch. The "NeoClassical" moniker may be slightly restrictive, as this mandolin covers so many bases, but is so light and exhuberantly musical that the well earned NeoClassical name has stuck. Don't let that stop you from getting one to play Irish, old-time, Jazz (or anything other than Bluegrass I would say) Priced very reasonably at $3,600 All Phoenix mandolins include a very nice (Eastman) fiberglass case. Just arrived. Fresh pics!

We look forward to a great relationship with Bruce Weber and his band of merry men. We speak mandolin here at Acoustic Music Works and we're proud to add the Weber line to our shop. Stay tuned!

Eastman mandolins, like their archtop guitars and violins, are handcrafted in Beijing, China and feature very high quality components. We ordered these mandolins over a year ago and they are just beginning to arrive, and they sell as quickly as they arrive. Production is still very limited, and they are *wildly* popular. These are a whole different class of instrument than all the other Asian imports - these are scary good. Extremely high quality workmanship and tone at extremely low prices. KM-1000
(SOLD) (NEW) Our hats are off to the folks at Saga. This new model, the Kentucky KM-1000, is clearly a step up from other intermediate level "import" mandolins. For a time in the late 70's and early 80's the Japanese-built Kentucky mandolins (KM1000, KM1500, KM-Dawg) were highly prized, and they remain so today. Well I am here to tell you that they are back. With Red spruce top, figured Northern Michigan maple back, and nitrocellulose lacquer finish sunburst, these handcrafted Chinese models have put Kentucky back in the game. The workmanship rivals or exceeds the very best import mandolins (Eastman) but the voicing, particularly for bluegrass, clearly favors the KM-1000 which has much better bark and chop than other imports. The KM-1000 includes a decent hardshell case, high quality (Gotoh) tuners, and the first instrument even arrived with a very decent shop setup, even included a leather silencer inserted in the silver-plated tailpiece. We'd still prefer to see a longer warranty than one year, and we will keep suggesting they extend that but for now - this is a mighty impressive accomplishment indeed for this price range. These will be made in very limited quantities. We're proud to offer this exceptional quality VERY attractively priced mandolin.

Kentucky
KM-1000
(SOLD) (NEW) Our second KM-1000. Man, I hope the wood supply holds up for the folks at Saga. The workmanship rivals or exceeds the very best import mandolins (Eastman) but the wood on this thing looks like wood we've seen only on very old Gibsons. We all know its hard (and expensive) to maintain this level of material in a mandolin - especially at this price! So our advice is get one while you can, as we feel something has to give. This mandolin should be selling for $800 more than it does. The KM-1000 with its Adirondack spruce top has much better bark and chop than other imports. This one has particulalry strong trebles and will be a legitimate bluegrass machine after it has been played a while. This mandolin has a particularly nice maple back and includes a decent hardshell case, high quality (Gotoh) tuners. Again, this is a mighty impressive accomplishment indeed for this price range. These will be made in very limited quantities and supply is very limited. We are pleased to offer them. SOLD (RT)

KM-1000
(SOLD) (NEW) Our third KM-1000. Just arrived. Nice open sound right out of the box. Even with light factory strings, it has a throaty growl and a full sound that does not belong on a mandolin at this price. Can't wait to hear it with a set of J-75s. SOLD (KH) Another one due next week -

KM-1000
(SOLD) (NEW) Our fourth KM-1000. Again...Nice fat trebles, strong throaty midrgange, loud. Another nice one. Nice Adirondack top on this one - we continue to say there is no mandolin on the market even close to this one for this price. This compares favorably with some $2,500 and $2,900 mandolins.

KM-1000
(SOLD)(NEW) Our seventh. Another Kentucky KM-1000 - so far, so good and this one might be the best one yet. The pictures speak for themselves and so does this instrument. Exceptional Adirondack spruce top on this one as well as highly figured maple on the back and strong tone right out of the box. Factory setup is pretty good, but we go over them to bring out the best. A little heavier string on the "A" is a good idea. Plays great. A *VERY* nice mandolin - just a KILLER mandolin at this price. Oct 1 - Kentucky has raised the list price on the KM-1000 to $1995 (new discount price: $1499)

Vern Bryant
F-5
(USED) VG condition 1993 Bryant F-5. Vern Bryant mandolins of Springfiled, VA (now made under the maker's own name with "Bryant" on the headstock) are in the hands of some top players. This mandolin has been consigned to us by a pro player.
While this mandolin is rather rustic in appearance next to some of the boutique brands we carry, old Vern here stands toe to toe with a lot of high end mandolins when it comes to sound. If you are in town, stop by and try it. You'll be very surprised!

A-2
Just arrived! (USED) VG condition 1921 (FON 11433) A-2 - appears to be all original with nice condition pickguard, tailpiece cover, bridge, tuners etc. The case also appears to be original, but is in slightly rough, typical shape with deteriorated handle and hinges. We very rarely see these 1920-era Gibsons come in in this condition. Most are in need of significant repair. This is the cleanest Gibson A-2 we have seen in several years. It is ready to enjoy. Great warm tone, straight neck, nicely set up. Typical fret wear, but not in immediate need of a fret job. ON CONSIGNMENT

Replacement (Loar style) adjustable bridge fitted and installed by Lou Stiver. One top crack (full length of the top) repaired (glued and cleated) by Lou Stiver. (Reduced price)
Nice straight neck, nice woody tone, recent setup, $2,400.

Phoenix
Custom
Just arrived (USED) Custom Phoenix model with optional finger-rest and McIntyre Feather pickup installed. Stiver F model Just arrived! (USED) We love Stiver mandolins and we get to see a fair number of them. These are very special to us. Lou Stiver is our friend and he does our mandolin repair work for us (great work indeed!) This is a very good example of his work, a 1978 F model, back when Lou was based in Akron, OH. This mandolin is in excellent condition, and appears to have been played very little (original frets still in great shape) but has that classic Stiver bark and volume. Ready to go blue-grassing. ON HOLD
Stiver A model Just arrived! (USED) We love Stiver mandolins and we get to see a fair number of them. These are very special to us. Lou Stiver is our friend and he does our mandolin repair work for us (great work indeed!) This is a very good example of his work, a 1993 A model with a scooped and radiused fretboard, a strap button, and a pro pickguard installed. The mandolin has the *classic* Stiver sound, with lots of bark, volume, and plenty of punch. This mandolin has been played a LOT in its fifteen years and has lots of scratches and some finish checking, and the finish has worn through behind the nut. Lots of peg-winder scratches on the headstock. All the flaws are cosmetic only - the instrument is extremely solid and has been recently re-fretted and set up by Lou Stiver. The sound is WIDE open. It's ready for its second fifteen years. SOLD

Nickel Schaller tuners with pearloid knobs, stamped tailpiece, roaring bluegrass tone. VG to Exc. condition. F model
(USED)
We love these and we get to see a fair number of them. These are very special to us. Lou Stiver is our pal and he does a lot of mandolin repair work for us (great work indeed!) Well here is a MAGNIFICENT 1989 Stiver F model that is among the best sounding Stiver F mandolins to roll through here...and we've seen our share.
This one is near perfect, purchased from the sons of the original owner, and has the original receipt in the case. It is all original and in nearly new condition but has been played and well cared for by someone who knew how to do both of those things well. It has the original rectangular case (also in perfect condition) and a few cool old accessories in the case. It is one I'd surely keep for myself if I didn't have this pesky predisposition to put the very best stuff "out there" where it belongs. Woof woof! Want a GREAT sounding Stiver mandolin? You've found it. Sorry - didn't last a day. SOLD

Collings
MF5 Custom
Varnish
(SOLD) (NEW) Because of our high ranking among Collings dealers, we were given our choice of the Summer NAMM Show display models. We didn't want to be greedy but we did take thirteen pieces and one of them is this positively *spectacular* F-5 mandolin that was built specifically for the trade show. It's just drop dead fantastic. The fat lady has sung. Elvis has left the building. It's a light amber color with tortoise binding and nickel Waverlies with black knobs and ebony pickguard with ever-so-subtle tortoise binding there as well. It is clearly a singularly gorgeous mandolin but the *sound* is that hauntingly rare woody and throaty combination that we hear every so often in a new mandolin. Charley Rappaport, our mandolin specialist, calls this one a "home run." Charley has been on the cover of Mandolin Magazine. This mandolin belongs there as well. The woods are superb - just plain master grade: magnificent one piece maple back busting with soft flame and quilt and a high grade set of clear straight grain Adirondack spruce. Varnish finish all over, of course. We've never seen or heard a nicer mandolin. This bird sings! It is a *steal* at this price. SOLD (JG)

Custom - Englemann
(SOLD)(NEW) Having sold a boatload of Collings mandolins now, we're pretty sure we know what we're doing. Well...here's what we're doing. A custom (and we mean custom) top of the line varnish finish MF5 Deluxe V. Well over a year in the making, varnish finish, special "stiff" Englemann spruce top, Gilchrist style brown-ish tobacco burst, one piece (been saving this for a worthy project) marbelized HARD Sugar maple back (from a VERY old tree) nickel Waverly tuners with pearl knobs, (NOTE: spec changed to GOLD hardware) engraved decorative headstock inlay and purfling, engraved tailpiece, and striped ebony pickguard. A tone bucket of well considered enthusiasm. A finger piano with a that undeniably cool scroll for the strap-thingy. Price includes deluxe Calton case. We've been told by several very reputable pickers who have visited the Collings factory and seen it in final stages that this mandolin is AMAZING! - And we have given first right of refusal to someone of impeccable taste and incredible patience who deserves it. (SOLD) (JV) Fresh pics - even better than anticipated - just an amazing sounding mandolin! We'll be doing more Englemanns - keep watching.

Collings
MF5
Deluxe V
(SOLD) Collings' new varnish finish F5. Bill Collings turns it up a notch by adding (finally!) a varnish finish, exotic headstock inlay, decorative purfling, silver Waverly tuners with pearl knobs, engraved tailpiece, bound ebony pickguard (yes!) and a bucket of dry tone. We saw our first one at the Nashville NAMM show in 2004 and it was magnificent. The guys in the Marshall amp booth had to ask us to play the mandolin more softly - it was drowning out the amps. Beautiful aged look to the binding and tone that will keep you up nights. Expensive and worth it. ETA: mid February. It is pre-sold. Reservations on future orders accepted. One piece back, Cremona brown sunburst (custom) It has a dry fat
bark that only a handful of "new" mandos have had in my experience. It has that
rattling throaty sizzle, a dark warmth, popping trebles, and a sternum pounding thump that I have only heard on a few...
What can I say? The finest item in the store. No less than magnificent. Off the charts visually and tonally. It's been over-nighted to its anxious owner, and while we hated to see it go, it went to a very good home. Before packing it (very carefully, I might add) I was able to pass it through the capable hands of Charley Rappaport, Alan Epstein, and Bob Artis, all of whom had nothing but high praise for the instrument. Charley in particular (who gets more mileage of out those skinny frets up top than any man I know) commented that the mandolin had *perfect* intonation - dead on and fat singing treble tones. One happy Gypsy! When Alan played it, I commented, "this one sounds like it has a 'tone gard' built right in" - More like it on order - and worth the wait!

Original ETA was "early June 2006" - Arriving early by special arrangement. Collings is treating us well. The fix is in!! Enough about that. What a beast!! Wow - a drop dead gorgeous "vintage looking" dark tobacco sunburst F style mandolin with the modern roar and punch and perfect intonation that we have come to expect from Collings. (SOLD) Bill Collings' varnish finish MF5 Deluxe V. Varnish finish, silver Waverly tuners with ivoroid knbs, decorative headstock inlay and purfling, engraved tailpiece. Special Order: Custom Gilchrist-style light brown cremona sunburst on Red spruce top with GREAT one piece (soft) Red big leaf maple back, and buckets of warm dry tone. "Red on Red" ETA late April, 2005. Customer Special Order - It is pre-sold. Reservations on future orders accepted. This one was ordered without a pickguard, but 'ol Bill went ahead and installed threaded brass inserts in the neck and provided a pickguard "on the side" (just in case). Look at the carbon fiber reinforcement on the back of the handcrafted pickguard. Check out the attachment scheme - that boy's a genius. This is another positively incredible mandolin. I tried to catch it from a few good angles indoors and out - the outdoor shots show the brown finish, the indoor flash shots show it as redder than it is. Beautiful woods, impeccable Collings workmanship, dark, loud, dry, throaty, crunchy, sternum rattling tone. Just magnificent. Nothing else to say on this one....except SOLD. Wanna reserve the next one?

Custom
(SOLD) (NEW) Another magnificent Bill Collings custom MF5 deluxe V - this one a special order for a good picker from Santee, SC. Oh, just another well considered world class varnish mandolin. Nothing too far afield from the classic F-5 design on this one - the nickel-silver Waverlies and engraved tailpiece and standard sunburst over a Red spruce top with a one-of-a-kind ONE PIECE back of very hard sugar maple and some special custom sinister "skull" etching to the pearl inlay on the headstock. Just a killer F5 as a reward for a life well lived. With silver Calton case. The notes really *pop* off this hard maple back, and the mandolin has incredible throaty midrange and piano-like trebles. Kicking butt and taking names... (SP)

Hand selected for us by someone with very good hands (and ears) at the Collings factory - one of the best sounding F-5 mandolins out of the box we have ever heard. Some mandolins develop a loose throaty gurgle after they open up, but very few have that quality on day one. If you are looking for instant gratification in a state of the art varnish F5 mandolin, I humbly submit to you that this should be your instrument. List price: $10,450 - our price $9,405. SOLD

(Varnish)
(SOLD) Bill Collings' standard MF5 with ($2000) optional varnish finish and gold hardware (Gotoh tuners). Buy a mandolin built and signed by the Lloyd Loar of his generation while you can. Call it your retirement fund. Absolutlely marvelous grain in the red spruce top. Great flame, nice and light. OK folks - straight scoop. We get a lot of great instruments coming through here. We get some awfully fine mandolins. 30 seconds with my trusty Dawg pick tells me THIS is the one. Visually, mighty purty. Tonally - off the charts. Everything that our ears know to listen for in a good mandolin is here in abundance in this throaty little box. The perfect blend of percussive chop with singing musicality. The high notes sound like a piano. Charley Rappaport, who is fond of saying things like "this will be a great mandolin someday" says of this one "this is a great mandolin *period*". Those of you (you know who you are) who have been asking me to call you when a "monster" comes through, a chopster, a Bush whacker, the one to grow old with. Consider yourself called. It's here. Fresh pics. Sorry, this magnificent instrument has been SOLD. $10,000

(SOLD) (USED) These don't come up very often, if ever! (well...the second time for us!) - a USED Collings MF. Tim O'Brien model
(SOLD) (NEW) a collaborative effort between Collings Mandolins and Mike Kemnitzer of Nugget Mandolins and the artist: the Tim O'Brien A Model Mandolin. Materials used for the soundboards, backs and bridges will be selected from Kemnitzer's private collection of hand-picked tonewood. The carve, brace and tap tune will take place at Nugget Mandolins and shipped to Austin, Texas where they will be transformed into completed instruments at the Collings workshop.
Ordered almost two years ago, production of these models is very limited. Tim O'Brien is one of our favorite performers. From Hot Rize to Tim and Molly, to the O'Boys, to his solo show and his collaborations with Darrel Scott and others, Tim just does it for us. We're thrilled
