Banjos

Acoustic Music Works generally has three dozen banjos in stock ranging from the all too infrequent banjo-ukulele or banjo-mandolin to tenors and the highest quality open back and resonator 5-string banjos for old-time and Bluegrass music. Call or e-mail for more information. We are interested in all things banjo, and good banjos are always coming and going. We offer repair and restoration of old banjos, stock wacky banjo accessories, and have an extensive selection of books and videos pertaining to banjo. We believe there should be a banjo in every home.

Here's Steve juggling a couple of fine Huss and Dalton bluegrass banjos: a gorgeous sunburst maple banjo in his right hand and a burled walnut banjo in his left hand. Behind him are a couple of Bart Reiters. One in fact, a Whyte Laydie, appears to be growing right out of his head.

Huss and Dalton Owens Mill traditional flathead bluegrass banjos feature Waverly V-2 tuning pegs, 3 ply maple rim, the highly regarded JLS pre-war style tone ring, Scorpion bridges, curly maple binding, the best hardware, perfect intonation, and incredible craftmanship. Huss and Dalton have applied their high end guitar craftsmanship techniques to the banjo. Jeff Huss worked for Geoff Stelling for ten years, and learned his banjo craft well. You've got to see and play these banjos to appreciate them. They compare favorably with the finest banjos ever made and come with arched top Huss and Dalton tweed cases.
Huss & Dalton Singletree
12"
custom
(SOLD) (NEW) The Huss & Dalton Singetree banjo - a simple 12" open back banjo with great old timey sound. To jazz this one up a little bit, we had them add the gryphon inlay on the headstock. This is a great playing banjo, light weight and plunky as all get out. SOLD

Yee Doggies! Shut my mouth! We've been a fan of these banjos since we were just little rednecks. Now we're all grown up and we're just busting to announce that we are now an authorized dealer for Stelling Banjos - arguably the finest bluegrass banjos on the planet. Heck, make that *all* the planets. Yup - no apologies needed. Exquisite handcrafted works of art with legendary tone and volume. Ask Alan Munde, Tony Trishcka, Bill Emerson, and a host of the most tasteful players alive and they will tell you that Stelling is the ultimate banjo.

Stelling now uses the Tony Pass 600TS old wood rim as standard equipment on all his new banjos. (Retrofits for older Stellings are also available.) This wood has been lying on the bottom of Lake Superior for over 100 years and could have been hundreds of years old when it was cut down. After a special kiln drying process, this wood is in better than new condition (acoustically speaking) because of the age of the wood combined with the microbiological action to which it was subjected for so many years. It's been said that Stradivarius took advantage of the same process for his violin wood, but for a much shorter time (perhaps only a few years). The result in a new Stelling banjo is awesome. It's been compared to prewar banjos in such a superior way for tone and volume that Stelling now uses these rims as standard equipment on all new banjos.

All Stellings have fifth string capo spikes installed at frets 7,8,9, and 10. All Stellings feature wedge-fitted pot assembly, adjustable tailpieces, compensated nuts, Stelling bridges, and buckets of tone. You want the best banjo money can buy? Consider getting a Stelling. And consider getting it from us!!
Stelling Golden Cross (NEW) The Stelling Golden Cross banjo. The first banjo to have the trademarked Stelling peghead shape, and was named for Tony Golden, who rode motorcycles with Geoff and bought the first Golden Cross. This model was also honored to be the banjo played by the late great Don Reno for the last ten years of his life, and was featured on many of his fine recordings with Bill Harrell. Originally made of walnut, the current Golden Cross features *fancy curly maple* with the golden sunburst stain. A powerful banjo, like all Stellings, with a crisp pop and singing clarity all over the neck. $4,750 List Price:

Stelling Custom Staghorn (NEW) The ultimate Stelling Staghorn banjo. The Staghorn has remained one of the most desired banjos in the world and has become the trademark model of Stelling Banjo Works. This custom model will have the optional heavy chrome plate hardware ($750) which is much more resistent to tarnish and the player's dream - a radiused fretboard ! Stelling Crusader (NEW) The Stelling Crusader banjo. Stelling's first mahogany model since 1978, the Crusader features a new peghead profile, a new script logo, and a longer scale length (26.428 vs. 26.25). Oh sweet day!@@ We opened the case and were immediately reminded of just how much we love Stelling banjos. This Geoff Stelling fellow is the Wizard of Whack. This is a crushingly good banjo. It arrived in tune and everywhere I look on a Stelling banjo I see those details that really do separate his banjos from the others. Everything is tight. Everything is clean, everything is there for a reason. Tony Pass Old Wood rim, Stelling compensated bridge, dual band tuners, Stelling adjustable tailpiece, 5th string capo spikes, pearl nut for fifth string. I put on my fingerpicks and dug into this banjo and my jaw dropped. Geoff Stelling, you da man!!! $4,300 List Price:

Stelling Swallowtail (SOLD) (NEW) The Stelling Swallowtail banjo. One of our favorite Stelling models. If you don't play banjo (yet) this could be a good reason to start. SOLD SOLD
Stelling Sunflower (On Order) The Stelling Sunflower banjo. By slightly modifying and adding to the simple Bellflower inlay pattern, and making the neck and resonator out of curly maple instead of walnut, Stelling created the Sunflower. Stelling Staghorn (On Order) The Stelling Staghorn banjo. The Staghorn has remained one of the most desired banjos in the world and has become the trademark model of Stelling Banjo Works. Sullivan Banjos Sullivan banjos come from good stock. After almost 30 years of supplying the finest banjo parts available for builders, manufacturers and home craftsmen worldwide, the Sullivan family now offers a banjo which is unsurpassed in quality and beauty, and has the much sought after tone found in many of the early banjos. Clarity all over the neck and a very strong bass represents the signature tone of these banjos.

The wood rims and resonators come from Jimmy Cox. The maple used in these 3-ply rims is the slow growth, cold climate, rock maple harvested on the Canadian border. Old recovered wood and the Tony Pass block rims are an extra cost option. The tonering used is a custom bell metal 20 hole flathead especially designed for the Sullivan banjo. The Sullivan logo is tastefully engraved on the skirt and this tonering is cryogenically treated to 300 degrees below zero for 12 hours to artificially age the metal. No need to have to wait 50 years to get the best sound your banjo can produce. Every part used in the construction of a Sullivan banjo is selected for perfection. Each step of the manufacturing operation is carefully monitored to insure the instrument you will play and enjoy for many years will still be worthy when you decide to pass it down to a deserving grandchild. Acoustic Music Works is proud to offer the Sullivan line of banjos.

The headstock has a hauntingly serene "lady holding a flower pot" theme. Simple position dots adorn the rest of the neck. It came to us for setup and consignment. Needs a new bridge, general cleanup, and I suppose a new head wouldn't hurt - these sound really good with Renaissance heads. Huss & Dalton Owens Mill
Maple Sunburst
(SOLD) (NEW) Huss & Dalton's 2006 NAMM Show Owens Mill 5 string banjo. This particularly exotic maple sunburst 5 string banjo has great traditional flathead bluegrass tone with lively response all over the neck. One of the great things about NAMM is that everywhere you turn, there is someone who can play "twice as better than I will" as the old song goes. Pictured here with Jens Kruger of the Kruger Brothers, Steve's jaw drops as Jens plays an *even better* version of Cripple Creek than Steve had just played. Jens commented that this was "wow - a very good banjo, VERY VERY good banjo", as he tore all over the neck. He found notes I did not realize a banjo actually had. Want a "VERY VERY good banjo?" (SOLD) SOLD
Huss & Dalton Mahogany (SOLD) What a banjo! The curly maple bindings add a touch of elegance to a mahogany banjo. This banjo really has the throaty growl of a great mahogany banjo. J.D would approve. Tweed case. SOLD

A Soldier's Joy, this banjo is. Really good for what ails ya - clean and light, with serious plunk. Ring, ring the banjo! SOLD
OME Grubstake (SOLD) (USED) Nice! Very good condition. Appears all original - Light resonator banjo - great intermediate banjo for a student or second banjo for an experienced player. Nice bright sound - good loud resonator banjo for folk or old-timey styles. Not a particularly loud bluegrass banjo, but has good sound and plays great. Friction tuner on fifth string, planetary tuners on headstock. Single coordinator rod, rosewood fretboard, 1/2" rim, brass hoop tonering. Tortoise style binding on resonator - mahogany neck and resonator. Includes hardshell case. Nice. SOLD
S.S. Stewart Universal Favorite (SOLD) (USED) VG+ Circa 1890's - serial # 12208 - stamped S.S. Stewart (Philadelphia, PA) on rim and dowel rod. Very nice old, metal clad thin rim VERY lightly built 5 string banjo. Very good condition. Friction tuners, calfskin head. Sounds great. It came to us for repair and consignment. It was missing a fifth string tuner and the tailpiece had been swapped out and it had some other cosmetic issues. We contemplated a full restoration, but it really didn't and doesn't need much. Do no harm. We come from the "if it aint' broke don't fix it" school of banjo repair, so we just dabbled around the edges. We installed a new (geared) 5th string tuner, a new (No-knot) tailpiece and a set of the LaBella nylon strings which are perfect for these light banjos. We polished the frets and well....this little Lady sings!! Light as a feather with chipboard case. SOLD
Stelling Swallowtail (SOLD)(USED) This marvelous Stelling Swallowtail banjo was sold new here one year ago. Designed by Geoff Stelling and banjo phenom and Irish stylist Tom Hanway, the neck and resonator are made of curly maple and stained with a sunburst Cremona-style finish. A magnificent banjo - really a special instrument with unique tone to match. If you don't play banjo (yet) this is an IDEAL reason to start and you'll never need another banjo. Beyond some tarnish on the nickel parts, this banjo could pass for new. A Stelling Swallowtail lists new for $5,300. This is used (the original paperwork is included but the warranty has been registered to the original purchaser) but you'd be hard pressed to find one in nicer condition. The original case (also in near new condition) is included. This is the Big Daddy of banjos - there are none finer. If you are reading this, we assume you already know about Stelling banjos. They are considered by many to be the finest banjos made. You can read more about them at www.StellingBanjo.com This one is a 2006 model and does include the Tony Pass Timeless Timbre rim. The rims are made from VERY old maple that was submerged in the Great Lakes for 100 years or so. You can read about them at: http://tonypassbanjorims.com/. The tone is well, "timeless" and loud and rich - if you've not played one, there is no way to describe it other than "watch out where you point that thing!!" This is a great banjo for bluegrass but also great for melodic style playing and seems to suit that Irish 5-string stuff (kind of an Irish-Bluegrass hybrid style) that Hanway has popularized. Lists new for $5,300 SOLD
Sullivan Bardstown (SOLD) (New) Mahogany resonator banjo - The Bardstown features a highly figured mahogany overlay on the back of the headstock, which perfectly matches the figured mahogany resonator. Forget your perception of mahogany as a "plain" banjo - the figured mahogany on this instrument is downright exotic. The lighest of the three Sullivan banjos with a lot of snarl and snort. Just the ticket. SOLD
Sullivan Greenbrier (SOLD) (NEW) Maple resonator banjo - Cox rim and resonator, Prucha hardware, old style Grover type pancake tuners. Sullivan tonering. All the right parts and excellent construction. Deep, rich tone. Powerful bass on these banjos! The 4th string is a revelation. A fine bluegrass banjo, to be sure. SOLD
