(USED) Collings CJ-35, Sitka Spruce Top, Mahogany Back and Sides, K&K Installed – $3,250

(USED) A few years back, Collings reimagined their Jumbo model, laying out a selection of spec and materials choices that would culminate in a more vintage-inspired voicing. The CJ-35 takes the woody, throaty sound of Collings’ slope shouldered dread, thickens it up a smidge, warms it up a pinch, and the resulting guitar does everything exceptionally well.

Sitka spruce top with subtle hints of bearclaw. Mahogany back and sides. Short 24.9″ scale, 1 3/4″ nut with 2 5/16″ string spacing at the saddle and “Vintage Now” neck profile (a little beefier than the normal “C” shape that appears on CJs). Light build with non-scalloped Adirondack spruce braces, abbreviated tongue brace, Wenge fingerboard and bridge (feels a lot like rosewood, but better wearing and lighter weight) and a very simple binding scheme with no top purfling.

Condition on this example is excellent, with only light fret wear under the unwound strings. There are a few light finish impressions on the treble side in the waist, can only be seen under strong light. Includes TKL hardshell case.

Not a “basic” guitar by any stretch, we would say “elemental” or “meat n’ potatoes”. A perennial shop favorite.
