(USED) Bozo Podunavac 12-String, Sitka, East Indian Rosewood – $5,975

(USED) The late Bozo Podunavac had a world-wide reputation for building distinctive, powerful guitars, and they can be heard on many seminal guitar albums, notably “6 and 12 String Guitar” by Leo Kottke.  John Fahey and Johnny Cash also played Bozo guitars over the years.  The sound is unmistakeable, and the responsiveness and volume of a Bozo seems at odds with its somewhat heavy build.  The 12-string version is quite hard to come by, and we’ve only seen a handful in our time.

This example is, we believe, from the late 60s and features a Sitka spruce top and what appears to be east Indian rosewood back and sides (the owner was told by Bozo that it could be Brazilian, though it really doesn’t appear that way to us). The owner spoke with Bozo and apparently Bozo said the guitar “pre-dated” serial numbers which dates it to the late 1960’s. The neck is mahogany, and the fingerboard and bridge are ebony.  Beautiful marquetry throughout and a bold rosette, typical of the man.  The playability is fantastic, and the sound is, well, the sound that we expect and want in a Bozo guitar.  Cosmetically, though, this instrument has seen better days.

There is ample finish checking all over the guitar, and particularly bad checking on the peghead.  There is a large crater in the lower bout which was filled with lacquer, which has since checked and paled in color. It is a player.

The instrument has also had many significant repairs done.  The bridge has been replaced (original is included). There are two large cracks running from the back of the bridge to the end of the soundboard, these have been professionally repaired and cleated.  There was a peghead crack where the headstock meets the running stock of the neck, also professionally repaired.  There is a repaired crack along the fingerboard extension on the bass side.  The back and sides are crack-free and the frets are in excellent condition with no pits or tracks. The repairs all appear to have been done professionally, and are stable. Please call with any other questions or for an in-hand description.

Includes custom Ameritage hardshell case.

A rare piece of acoustic guitar history. And a truly great sounding 12-string.
