(NEW) Collings D3, 42-Style Top Inlay, Adirondack, Wenge – $7,400

(NEW) As supplies of Brazilian rosewood continue to diminish (Collings hasn’t had it on the menu for several years now) we eagerly pursue new tropical hardwoods that have similar visual and tonal characteristics to the classic flat-topped guitars of yesteryear. One tonewood that we are building extensively with these days is Wenge, which evokes Brazilian’s complex sound, rich overtone content and simple, quarter-sawn good looks. The two woods are of a similar density, and sound-wise it would be hard to distinguish the difference in a blind test.

This D3, Collings’ top of the line, is destined to be an heirloom instrument. We’ve complimented the aforementioned Wenge back and sides with a creamy, tight-grained Adirondack spruce top, and of course while we’re at it, why not get some abalone on there? It’s hard to imagine a prettier guitar in the classic American style.

Other specs include 1 3/4″ nut width, Adirondack braces, full ivoroid binding, Gold Waverly tuners and Style-3 backstrip. Includes new Collings’ branded TKL hardshell case.

An exemplary dreadnought in every way, big and rich sounding, strummed or picked.
