(NEW) Collings D2HT Traditional Dreadnought, Sitka, Indian Rosewood – $4,770

(NEW) A project several years in the making, the Collings Traditional series takes the expertly built Collings dreadnought and tweaks a few features for a more vintage-inspired voice. We can immediately hear the warmer voice in the T models, and these guitars are able to retain the signature Collings clarity, balance and power while slightly dialing back the midrange.

The Traditional package is a combination of specs and construction techniques that owe to traditional American guitar building. Forward shifted, scalloped braces, animal glue construction and a thinner nitrocellulose lacquer finish all give the guitar a big sound. The neck has been beefed up slightly, and the unique Traditional profile is not unlike Collings’ Vintage Now carve. There is a 1 3/4″ width at the nut and wide 2 5/16″ string spacing at the cut-through saddle. The fingerboard edges are rolled for a smooth, played-in feel, and the inlays are long-pattern diamonds and squares. Other cosmetics include a zipper backstrip, and a newly designed rosette and herringbone top purfling.

The Sitka spruce top is tight grained and very even in color, and the Indian rosewood back and sides are a dark-chocolate brown. As always, the materials selection is impeccable on this instrument. As of 2017, every Collings dreadnought also includes the fantastic Collings-built vintage-style case, which is lightweight and impeccably balanced to perfectly protect the instrument. Look at that liner!
