(NEW) Every so often we get a call from our friends at Collings, informing us that Bruce Van Wart, master luthier and Collings’ “wood man” since the very beginning, has built a guitar using some specially selected materials. These instruments are always crazy-good, taking Collings’ already impossibly high cosmetic and tonal standards and, yes, going even further. Would we be interested in a Bruce guitar? OH YES WE WOULD! ASAP!
We can say with no hesitation that this is one of the finest sounding CJs we’ve ever heard! It pairs an incredible looking tight-grained Adirondack spruce top with some equally impressive figured mahogany, and has a few elegant appointments to put it over the top… Abalone rosette, fully bound neck and peghead, and the pick guard “on the side” (Bruce just didn’t want to obscure any of that perfect Adi!) 1 3/4″ nut width, full 25.5″ scale, Adirondack braces.
The sound is big but also very balanced and undeniably sweet. The hot Collings midrange is certainly there, his tonal signature, but there is endless slope-shoulder warmth and the woody clarity of mahogany. There’s a tonal complexity that we normally don’t expect from this kind of guitar in these tonewoods. It’s just a superb example.
For those who ask to be called when something special arrives, consider yourself called!
