So…the phone rings. It’s Dana Bourgeois.  Anything “special” you’d like us to build for the Fall?

Says us:  You betcha!

DB: How about a great D-42 dread to match that OM-41 you got at the NAMM Show last Summer?

DB: Aged Tone Adirondack spruce?

Us: You betcha!

DB: Anything else?

Us: Can we have two?

DB: How about one more OM and one Dread?

US: You betcha!

So there you have it, the long and the short of ordering heirloom grade guitars from one of the top builders in the world. We draw the lines; he adds the color.

OK now… We’ve now had over THREE DOZEN of the Bourgeois Aged Tone guitars, and every single one has been SPECTACULAR. Having done this for some time now, and having experience with Dana Bourgeois going back to the single digits in serial numbers, I can tell you these are the best guitars he has ever built. In fact, if you have a “regular” (no slouch) Bourgeois, you owe it to yourself to compare your trusty companion to his new lightly built, hide glue, Aged Tone guitars.

So, we wait and we wait for Dana to find us the right set of beautiful Brazilian rosewood tonally and visually worthy of the project. He has and we did. Now you should. The Brazilian set for this guitar has all the qualities we love – rugged “organic” old-growth look with tap tone until Tuesday, LOTS of coloration, with highlights of green, purple, and cocoa in the rosewood. Easy on the eyes, easy on the ears, and has that unmistakable Brazilian rosewood scent as well!

JUST ARRIVED, then, at your favorite lumber emporium is our modern Holy Grail, a Brazilian rosewood AGED TONE Bourgeois D-42 with a beautifully “aged” Adirondack spruce top and hide glue construction. We know what to expect, and we expected the best, but got even more than we had hoped for. If you’d like to be part of this celebration, keep an eye on these pages. For this “42” model, Dana dug into his private stash for some old growth Brazilian that is loaded with character – exhibiting some of the color and mineralization that the species is known for. That high mineral content is what makes the material difficult to work with, being literally hard on saw blades and tools. It is a very special OLD set, worthy of this great guitar.

We’ll say it one more time: We like our guitars old. These new Bourgeois Aged Tone guitars sound old. Face it, old guitars sound better, and folks in the guitar industry are forever trying to find a secret elixir, a time machine, and all manner of things to try to get these shiny new guitars to sound 60 years old – to sound “aged”.

Well… Dana Bourgeois’ new “Aged Tone” guitars are the real deal. Count us among the converted. Long story short: Dana’s expertly voiced tops are heated (“roasted”, cooked”, “baked”, “torrified”, “thermally cured” – choose your verb) in an oxygen-free kiln until they turn a golden brown. The wood stiffens, and gets lighter in weight while it goes through some structural and tonal transformation. Then the guitars are finished with an ultra-thin and hard cyanoacrylate finish and constructed with hide glue. Fast forward to our showroom and your ears: The guitars have an explosively resonant fullness that goes beyond “volume”. Trust us: If a professional level, heirloom grade Brazilian D-42 is your thing: This vintage-style Brazilian D with Adirondack top is about as good as a guitar can be. 1 and 23/32″ nut width, 2.2″ belly bridge, fancy fossil ivory bridge pins, Mammoth ivory nut, abalone purfling and crosscut ivoroid body binding. We asked Dana to match an “old-looking” set heirloom-grade D-42 “worthy” of Brazilian with an “crazy handsome Adirondack top”. Trust us. You’ll see. We hold this builder, and this guitar in VERY high regard. If you like great guitars, you should call us now.
